Visitors flock to the Swiss Alps, the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and small Alpine towns like Murren for two things: hiking and skiing. We were anxious to check out a few of the numerous hiking trails so that's how we spent the majority of our free time while staying in Murren. It rained off and on all three days we were there but we didn't let the rain hinder our plans.
To reach our first hiking trail on the other side of the valley, the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg trail, we sampled several of Switzerland's fun modes of transportation. We rode a cogwheel train from Murren to Grutschalp and a cable car down to Lauterbrunnen. We walked across the street to catch a mountain train up to Wengen and from there rode a gondola to Mannlichen. Despite the rain and the fog, the views along the way were spectacular.
The hiking trail from Mannlichen down to Kleine Scheidegg travels through rolling hills, ridges and pastures for about two and a half miles with fabulous views of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch mountains at every turn. Along the trail we saw black salamanders and fields of wildflowers.
We were cold and wet when we reached Kleine-Scheidegg so we took a train back down to Wengen where we found a cute restaurant and warmed up with a hot bowl of soup (ghoulash).
We rode another train back down to Lauterbrunnen and spent some time exploring the town before continuing on to Murren and our hotel for a hot shower and dinner.
